We all have crossed many bridges in our lives. They make travelling from one place to another easier, faster, and smoother. Transition words are nothing but bridges in the English language. They are words that are added to a sentence to connect two sentences or even paragraphs. 

When it comes to transition words in SEO, they not only consist of singular words such as ‘but’ or ‘also’. They also consist of a bunch of words, or phrases, such as ‘in this paragraph’ or ‘in comparison to’. 

These words can be used anywhere, i.e., at the start of the sentence, the middle, or even at the end.

As the name suggests, this type of transition word is used to show a cause-and-effect relationship between two sentences. For example, I have to get up early in the morning. Thus, I will sleep on time tonight. The term ‘thus’ acts as a transition word here. 

2. Clarification

Clarification is a type of transition word that is used to explain the previous sentence or idea in-depth. For example, transition words increase the readability of your content. In other words, the use of transition words ensures that your users can understand and comprehend your content much easier.

Here ‘in other words’ acts as a clarification transition word. 


Contrast transition words help you compare two different thoughts or sentences together. For example, I am generally scared of dogs. But, on the other hand, I like my friend’s dog. 

In this case, ‘but, on the other hand’ acts as the contrast transition word.

4. Example

Example transition words are used to make it easier for your user to know that the upcoming line is an example of the previous line, to help them understand better. 

For example, every example we have given for the previous 3 points. 

5. Emphasis

Emphasis transition words are used to indicate to your reader that the following sentence or thought is of high priority. 

For example, SEO is very important for your business. Most importantly, when it comes to reaching a larger section of the audience. 

In this case, ‘most importantly’ acts as the emphasis transition word. 

6. Enumeration

Enumeration transition words are used to make it easier to spot a group of ideas that are classified together. 

For example, today, I’m going to write a post. In addition, I’m recording some video lessons. 

In this case, the term ‘in addition’ acts as the enumeration transition word. 

7. Time

Many get confused between time and enumeration transition words, as they are somewhat similar. Time transition words are used to convey a specific order, operations, or processes. 

For example, I’ll start by telling you what transition words are. After that, I’ll tell you why you should always use them. 

In this case, the term ‘after that’ acts as a time transition word. 

8. Similarity

Similarity translation words are quite self-explanatory. They are used to compare two similar thoughts or sentences together. 

For example, She tried hard to entertain her guests. Similarly, he put all his heart and soul into cooking a great meal. 

In this case, the term ‘similarly; acts as the similarity transition word. 

9. Summarization/concluding

Summarization or concluding transition words are used to finish a specific thought, sentence, or a topic. 

For example, in conclusion,  transition words are an important aspect of SEO writing. 

In this case, ‘in conclusion’ acts as the summarization or concluding transition word.

Just knowing what transition words are and their different types are not enough to make the best use of them. You must learn about how you can improve your transition words for SEO. 

1. Be aware of the most used transition words

It is always good and very important to be aware of the most used transition words, that can help you make your content more readable, and help your users understand it better. 

We have mentioned a few of the most used transition words above. You should consider them as well when you are writing content for your website. 

Once you have a better understanding of the most used transition words, you will be able to implement them as and when required. This would increase the readability of your content, and provide an enhanced user experience. 

2. Understand how your thoughts and ideas are related to each other
